Distantly related to the clockmaking Willard family, Alexander Willard pursued his trade in Ashby, Massachusetts. Like other clockmakers of the era working in small communities, Willard needed to diversify to earn a living. He served as postmaster and town clerk, and managed the construction of a local turnpike. Family history relates that Ellsworth Hubbard first owned this clock. A pencil notation of Hubbard’s name on the back of the dial confirms this story.
