Civil War veteran and first Mayor of Medford, Massachusetts, Samuel Crocker Lawrence (1832–1911), served as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction from 1909 to 1910. He is pictured here, at center, with Active Members of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s Supreme Council, the governing body of the jurisdiction. The men in this portrait wear distinctive round jewels suspended from ribbons that indicate their role in the organization.
