Louis XIV signs the passport of a ship's captain. Provenance note on reverse: "This permit, granted by King Louis XXIV [sic] of France, presented to Chas. H. Townsend by Capt. de Brice of the Imperial Navy and Director General of the Port of Le Havre, 1862." Forms part of the Elwell Autograph Collection.
