Nathaniel Mulliken, Sr. made clocks like this one for his neighbors in Lexington and for residents in neighboring towns. Trained in clock making by his uncle, Nathaniel moved from Bradford, Massachusetts, to the newer community of Lexington in the 1750s. Nathaniel Mulliken, Sr., died in 1767, leaving his wife with seven children aged 2 to 16. However, she was able to manage. With her sons, she looked after the family’s small farm. Nathaniel, Jr., learned enough of the clockmaking trade to take over the business. In 1775 their substantial shop attracted the unwanted attention of retreating British troops on April 19 and was burned to the ground.
