Brown leather trunk with metal corners and lock plate; surface designs of brass tacks and embossed leather; interior lined with pink floral print cloth; leather hinges broken and lid attached to trunk only by two straps; lid slightly crushed.


In February 1775, the Committee of Safety listed the medical supplies an army 15,000 strong would need. Medical chests containing drugs, such as opium, laudanum, ipecac and Epsom salts, and surgical kits with scalpels, bone saws, tourniquets and needles topped the list. Equipment and drugs proved hard to find. By July the army in Massachusetts only had two chests at their disposal. Dr. John Warren (1753-1815), the younger brother of Dr. Joseph Warren and a surgeon for the Continental Army, used this chest.
