Keep Within Compass Teapot

Creamware teapot. Body (A) is globular form with handle on one side and spout on other. Handle is decorated with leaf motif; spout is also decorated with a raised leaf motif. Teapot is transfer-printed in black. Both sides show a central figure (a man on one side and a woman on the other) inside a circle inscribed by a compass. Lettering on the circle around each figure reads, "Keep Within Compass and you Shall be Shure to Avoid Many Troubles which Others Endure." Each side shows four vignettes around the central motif depicting figures who did not live a virtuous life. Printed at the top of the compass on both sides is "Fear God / Know Thyself." Printed on the arms of the compass on both sides is "Bridle thy will / Remember thy end." Below the female figure is printed, "The Virtuous Woman is a Crown to her Husband." Below the male figure is printed, "The End of the Upright Man is Peace." Impressed mark on the bottom reads, "Wedgwood & Co." The lid (B) is round with a round knob at top center. The lid is transfer-printed in black with a border of neoclassical swags.
