The Masonic altar is the focal point of a lodge room--the holy books, square, and compasses rest on it and all ceremonies are conducted around it. The motto on this altar, "Glory to God; Goodwill to Men," could be considered the simplest summation of Freemasonry's religious beliefs. The altar was originally used by Union Lodge in Dorchester, Massachusetts. For more information, see Hamilton, John D., "Material Culture of American Freemasons," 1994, p. 63.
