Three-quarter portrait shows brown-haired man wearing dark coat, vest, stock, and white shirt; Masonic pin/stud of square and compasses attached to second shirt button, painted in gold; plain, brownish-black background. Painting is in black sculptured frame with gold liner.

The portrait’s subject and its painter are unknown. Along with his white shirt, gold buttons, and plain but neat black coat and waistcoat, the subject chose to wear a gold pin formed in the shape of a square and compasses. In the mid-1800s this symbol of Freemasonry would have been known to Masons and non-Masons alike and identified the man depicted here as a member of the fraternity.
