Master Mason certificate issued by Morton Lodge, No. 63 (Hempstead, N.Y.) to Silvanius Smith and dated December 27, 1802. Imprint at bottom of certificate reads, “Bror. Rollinson Sculpt.”


Signed and Sealed: Masonic Certificates, corridor, part one, 2017 Master Mason Certificate, ca. 1802 Issued to Silvanius Smith, Morton Lodge No. 63, Hempste[a]d, New York Engraved by William Rollinson (1762-1842), New York, New York Museum Purchase, A87/022/001 Along with Masonic symbols, this certificate designed by William Rollinson features a depiction of King Solomon’s Temple and figures representing Justice (with scales), Prudence (with a mirror), Charity (with children), Temperance (with a pitcher) and Fortitude (with an eagle). Rollinson designed certificates with a similar layout for several other New York lodges. He tailored them by changing the lodge name and location and customizing the emblem at the top of certificate.
