Masonic Master Mason Apron
ink on silk, cotton
overall: 17-1/2"h x 16"w x 1/8"d
Museum Purchase

Masonic Master Mason apron with slightly animal-shaped body and rounded flap. Peach pleated silk trim. Off-white and printed in black. Flap shows an all-seeing eye above a delta or triangle with three heads and letter codes above. Body shows an arrangement of Masonic symbols. At center are two columns at the top of three steps. In between is an archway with a keystone with G and a mosaic pavement. Three candlesticks and a Bible are at the back of the pavement. At front is a keystone with "HTWSSTKS." Just under the archway is the ark of the covenant. A classical figure, gesturing upward, stands on the keystone at the top of the archway. To one side is a sword pointing to a heart and to the other, a sword pointing to a book. There are Masonic symbols along the outside of the columns - ladder, ark and dove, hand holding a plumb, anchor, urn with incense, beehive, hand holding scales and the 47th problem of Euclid. Symbols along the bottom include: plumb, square, level, a shovel, pick and crowbar, scythe and coffin, trowel, gavel, winged hourglass, rule and mallet. Attached at the upper corners are red ties. Lined with off-white glazed cotton.
