Masonic Master Mason apron with rounded body and rounded flap, painted and gold leafed on white silk with light blue pleated silk trim; Masonic design of two columns flanking square, compasses and bible, three-step Masonic pavement and other symbols; flap with all-seeing eye; reverse lined with white linen; printed by hand in black ink on reverse of apron "CHARLES PEABODY"; printed blue paper label of the artist on reverse reads "Painted by Lakeman & ------ [name crossed out in ink] / Corner of Essex and Washington Streets / Salem, Mass."


In 1825 ornamental painter Nathan Lakeman advertised that he offered, "Masonic aprons of the newest and most elegant patterns, constantly for sale...." He also sold "Floorings" and "Royal Arch Dresses...at short notice." This apron is marked with Lakeman's name as well as the name of its owner, Charles Peabody (1798-1875). Both men belonged to Jordan Lodge in Danvers, Massachusetts and likely enjoyed a relationship as fraternal brothers as well as craftsman and client. “The Badge of a Freemason: Masonic Aprons from the Collection,” March 2016-March 2017
