Moyer, Henry, 1785-1860
USA: New York
Watercolor, ink, on paper
16" x 12 1/4"; 41 x 32 cm.; 1 item (1 page)
A hand-painted Fraktur drawing created by German-born artist Henry Moyer, a resident of Minden, New York. Moyer’s Fraktur records the family history of the Zuller-Moyer families and is dated February 1825. The work is decorated in red and blue hues and adorned by Masonic symbols. Moyer most likely was a follower of the artist William Murray.
From the mid-1700s on, many American families desired to record their marks on the world. Couples commissioned professional artists to prepare decorative presentations detailing their marriage dates along with their children's birth dates. These records celebrated their family and assured that following generations would remember their ancestors.
