Sixth-plate cased ambrotype portrait of unidentified man wearing Masonic Past Master jewel on coat. Half case of leather, glass and metal.

The subject of this portrait wears a Past Master's jewel with his street clothes. Past Master's jewels were typically presented to members who had served as the leader of their lodge to recognize their service and experience. In many jurisdictions, Past Master's jewels are in the shape of a rayed sun within a compasses and quadrant, as pictured here.
