Artist F. O. C. Darley provided illustrations for author Washington Irving’s multi-volume work, Life of George Washington. In this large-scale engraving, which the publisher Alexander Hay Ritchie dedicated to the writer, Darley showed George Washington entering New York on November 25, 1783, the day that British troops left the city.
