Black and white carte-de-visite photograph mounted on off-white cardboard. The subject is shown standing against a painted backdrop. At one side is a podium and he rests one hand on top. In his other hand he holds a black hat with black plume. The subject wears a dark coat and pants with a white shirt and patterned cravat. He also wears a fraternal collar with fringe and tassels. The ends are joined by a rosette and the collar is decorated with five-points stars and eagles. One side of the collar has initials "A O H," signifying the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Printed in brown on the back is "M. Moulthrop / Photographer / 298 Chapel St. New Haven / Conn. / Negatives Preserved."


The Ancient Order of Hibernians was founded in May 1836 in New York and Pennsylvania. The group considers itself the oldest Irish Catholic fraternal organization in the United States.
