Masonic sepia-tone carte-de-visite photograph of a man [James P. Johnson]. Three-quarter length view. Subject has a beard and wears a dark coat with white shirt and dark bow tie. He has a pin on his coat. Over his clothes he wears a Masonic apron and sash; a square and compasses jewel hangs from the end of the sash. The apron shows a temple with sun, moon and wreath. The sash shows a square and compasses symbol and other symbols. A handwritten signature is at the bottom, "Jas. P. Johnson." Printed on the back is a maker's name in blue, "Chaigneau y Lavoisier / Jardin de Abadie / Valparaiso." Handwritten in pencil on the back is "Naval or Ships Officer / Probably American after / coming "round the horn / He would put in here to / refit [illeg] / Masonic apron + sash."
