The subject is Civil War general Alfred Pleasonton.


Alfred Pleasonton was born in Washington, DC, in 1824. He attended the U.S. Military Academy, graduated in 1844 and fought in the Mexican-American War. During his Civil War service, he was promoted to brigadier general in July 1862 and led a division of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac during the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was promoted to major general in June 1863 and was placed in command of the Cavalry Corps. In 1864, he was sent to the front in Missouri. He resigned his commission in 1868 and worked for the Internal Revenue Service. Pleasonton died in Washington, DC, in 1897.
