sheet: 4"h x 2-1/2"w
Gift in memory of Jacques Noel Jacobsen
Sepia-toned fraternal carte-de-visite photograph. Full-length portrait of man wearing black overcoat and pants, brown shoes, white shirt, bow tie, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows collar and apron. The collar is dark, with a lighter fringe and border, along with a floral design. The apron is also dark with a lighter fringe and border; it has a tent enclosed in a wreath with a three-link chain on the body, and a sun-like rosette on the flap. The man is holding a rapier-like sword in his right hand, which is pointing down and touching the ground. To the left of the man (the right side of the photograph) is a rail with an ornate newel post at the end. The man is standing within a rounded rectangular shadow. All four corners of the carte-de-visite have been cut. Printed in black on the back is "Change of locality. / Photographed by / Chas. A. Saylor, / at the / New Gallery, / over Heizmann's / One square below the Rail Road. / No work allowed to leave this Estab- / lishment that is not perfectly satisfactory."
