Quincy Adams Gillmore was born in Ohio in 1825. He graduated from West Point in 1849, ranked first in his class. After graduation, he joined the Corps of Engineers and then returned to West Point to teach military engineering. At the start of the Civil War, Gillmore was placed on the staff of General Thomas W. Sherman. In 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general, followed by a promotion to major general in 1863. Gillmore died in New York in 1888.
