Masonic Royal Arch Mason Samuel Larison
1860-1869
Maker not marked
USA: California
Photograph on paper mounted on board
Gift in memory of Jacques Noel Jacobsen
2008.038.17

Black-toned Masonic Royal Arch carte-de-visite photograph. Portrait of man standing; man blends into shaded foreground below his apron. Man is wearing a black coat and pants, white shirt, and Masonic sash and apron. Fringed apron has Royal Arch emblem, and fringed flap with two stars and a triangular motif, perhaps the all-seeing eye. Sash has border. Man is holding a book in his right hand. Next to the man, to his right, is a table covered with a tablecloth. The photograph has two thin lines that form a border around the edge. On the back, a piece of paper is taped to the photograph. On this taped paper is handwritten "Samuel Larison"; directly below this name, it is printed in black "TOGETHER will all and si [illeg.] / any wise appertaining and the." Both printed lines have been cut off. Also on the back, above the tape, is handwritten in pencil "65-." At the very top of the back of the photograph, there is a faint handwritten "Samuel Larison."
