a: Black-and-white photograph of man in military uniform. Man, of portly build and with mustache, is seated, with left hand resting on hilt of sword. He is dressed in a tricorn hat with a feather on top and a pin on side facing camera which features an eagle with its wings spread, arrows, and a shield and is fixed atop a circular, ridged fabric backing. Coat features wide, pointed collar and band of trim around opening, hem, and cuffs, which are lighter in color compared to fabric in body of coat; fabric along cuffs and front opening of coat are trimmed with plain round buttons. Necktie and shirt are white; shirt features ruffles on front and at cuffs. Chevron of three stripes on upper sleeve of arm resting on sword; another chevron slightly visible on other sleeve. Belt around waist features raised decorative pattern along its body, a rectangular buckle with overlapping "A" and "V" at center and floral decoration around, and a chain with hooks hanging from strap and extending around back of coat on subject's left side. Sword upon which subject's hand is resting features knuckleguard with simple decorative carving. Along light-colored trim of coat, next to sword blade, is artist's signature, "H. P. Moore / Concord N.H.". Photograph embellished throughout with black crayon and white chalk. Photograph mounted to cloth (linen?), which is nailed to wooden stretcher. b: Frame, of varnished brown wood, features dark-stained outer edge that is carved in alternating pattern of squares and small beads; a raised inner "lip," inside which is another carved decorative edging in a repeating chain pattern, and finally, where frame meets glass glazing, an edging of brass-colored metal cast in decorative repeating bead pattern. Glass glazing has two round yellow stickers at upper PR corner, one with "154" handwritten in black ink on it, the other, "110". Back of frame of rough, untreated wood, with nails and some brownish remnants of former paper backing. Rusty, O-shaped metal hooks for hanging on either side. Handwritten at bottom, in black pencil: "25 x 36" (upside down, on inner rim of backing), as well as "#210" / #296" grouped together in large parentheses, with "25 x 36 Moore" to its PL, underneath.
