Shield-shaped Masonic Civil War identification (ID) badge with vertical pin back. Engraved on the front is a square and compasses symbol in the center. Lettering around the symbol reads, "Jos. W. Perry / 7th Co. / Hvy Arty."


Joseph W. Perry, a soldier in the American Civil War, wore this pin so that his body could be identified if he was killed or wounded. It signified his Masonic membership, which might gain him aid from soldiers on the opposing side.
