Lithograph shows scene of General Shields in battle, center, on horseback; wounded soldiers in foreground, soldiers marching in background; on bottom: "Pubd by Currier and Ives / Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1862 by Currier and Ives in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York 152 Nassau St New York / Genl Shields at the Battle of Winchester, VA 1862 / The Battle was commenced on the afternoon of March 22nd at which time Genl Shields while in the act of leading forward his men was struck by a fragment of a shell which broke his arm above the elbow, and so far disabled him, that the next day he was obliged to give his orders for the battle, while extended on his couch. His brave followers fought with such desperate valor that they forced back the Rebel Army under Jackson and drove them in flight from the field"; hand-colored in blue, red, gold.
