Sepia-toned fraternal carte-de-visite photograph. Full length portrait of unidentified man wearing dark coat, pants, and shirt; bow tie, shoes, and apron and collar. Collar is dark and fringed, with a floral design. Apron is white, with a shield with two crossed keys. Both the flap and bottom edge of the apron are fringed. A tassel hangs from the point of the flap. The man is holding onto a chair with his right hand; the chair has a cushion, and six vertical rails on the back. The photograph has a gilt, double lined border. The carte-de-visite has been trimmed at each of the corners, and along the top edge. On the back are two reddish one cent tax stamps, each with a picture of George Washington and the text "U.S. Inter. Rev. / One / Cent / Proprietary." Printed in blue on the back is an eagle and shield motif and the text "Photographed by / Clarke & Wiley, / 539 Penn St. / Reading, PA. / Negatives pre- / served for / [text covered by stamp] year." Handwritten in pencil on the back is "Treasurer / X keys on apron / c 1863-66 / KAUA."
