Landscape scene. A robed figure (Zerubbabel) stands in pensive attitude among the ruins of a Biblical temple, amidst a litter of stonemasons tools, focusing on an ethereal vision of a new temple atop a distant hill.

Thought to have once been a wall decoration in a Jaffrey, New Hampshire, Masonic lodge, this painting shows a scene related to Zerubbabel’s vision of Solomon’s Temple. This story forms part of Royal Arch and Scottish Rite degrees. The unknown artist who painted this work likely based it on a colored lithograph produced by a Masonic publisher in 1867.
