USA: Maine (probably)
Photograph on paper mounted on board

Sepia-toned, hand-tinted Masonic carte-de-visite photograph. Full-length portrait of man standing. Man is wearing black coat, pants, and shoes; white shirt and apron; light blue sash, and treasurer's jewel. Man is holding onto a chair with his right hand, and standing on a dark, patterned rug. Photograph is bordered by thin double lines around the edge. Handwritten on back in pencil is "Andrew P. / Gilkey / Treasurer / Royal Arch Masons."

The subject of this portrait is likely Andrew P. Gilkey (1809-1890) of Islesborough, Maine. A member of Island Lodge No. 89, where he was initiated in 1857, Gilkey served as Treasurer of the lodge from 1860 through 1870. In this portrait, Gilkey wears a jewel in the shape of crossed keys, the symbol of a lodge Treasurer. Records at the Grand Lodge of Maine show that Gilkey demitted from Island Lodge in 1879.
