Thomas Arthur Doyle was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1827. He worked as a clerk and later as a stockbroker and real estate auctioneer. In the 1850s he began 18 years of service on the Providence School Committee. Doyle was elected Mayor of Providence in June 1864, serving until 1869 and later serving two more terms from 1870 to 1881 and from 1884 until his death in June 1886. Between his second and third terms as Mayor, he was elected to the state senate. An active Freemason, Doyle received the 33rd degree in 1863. In addition to other positions in Freemasonry, he served as Grand Master of Rhode Island for seven years starting in 1865. In 1870, the year he signed this photograph, Doyle held the office of Commander in Chief of the Providence Consistory.
