Photograph on paper mounted on board
Gift of Jacques Noel Jacobsen, Jr.
Sepia-tone cabinet card photograph mounted on white cardboard with gilt edge. Gold-tone lettering in the bottom border reads, "8 & 10 1/2 King St. W. Hamilton, Ont. Farmer Bros. 92 Yonge St. Toronto, Ont." The photograph shows a bust view of an unidentified man wearing International Order of Good Templars regalia. He has gray/white hair pulled back from his face. He wears a dark double-breasted coat, a white shirt and a white cravat. He also wears a fringed fraternal collar with a rosette and tassels joining the ends together. The collar has elaborate floral decoration and the initials, "R.W.G.T." He has a round lapel pin on one coat lapel.
RWGT stands for "Right Worthy Grand Templar" in the International Order of Good Templars. The order was founded in Utica, NY, in 1850 as the "Knights of Jericho." Originally, the group had three degrees in its ritual, but later switched to one. Both men and women could be admitted as members.
