Fraternal Jewels with Crescent Moon, Star and Clouds
1870-1930
Unidentified
metal
Museum Purchase
2006.010a-e

Set of five white metal fraternal jewels. Each has a silver-tone pin at top with a vertical pin back. The front of the pin is an openwork crescent moon next to a five-point star, both resting on clouds. Below these elements is an open rectangle where a ribbon could be inserted. A has a pendant shaped like a harp with a winged body along the side and top. B has a pendant of crossed gavels. C has a pendant shaped like a pair of scales. D has a pendant shaped like an open book (probably the Holy Bible). E has a pendant shaped like a lantern; in the center is a clear glass ball.

Fraternal organizations often use jewels like these to signify the group's officers. The identity of the group that originally used these in not known. Research is ongoing to try and identify that group.
