The French company Japy Frères manufactured a variety of metal items in the 1800s and 1900s, including typewriters, cookware, and hardware. The company’s roots, however, were in watch making. Appealing to a late 1800s vogue for all things Egyptian, an artist ornamented this clock's porcelain case with Egyptian motifs and hieroglyphs. This clock’s exotic decoration and its expertly manufactured works may have made it an attractive addition to Michael’s collection.
