Political campaign banner for Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) and Thomas A. Hendricks (1819-1885); horizontal stripes in blue, white and red; six white stars are in the blue stripe; black lettering in the white stripe reads "Cleveland and Hendricks."

In the 1884 election, Republican ticket James G. Blaine (1830-1893) and John A. Logan (1826-1886) lost to Democratic candidates Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) and Thomas A. Hendricks (1819-1885). Cleveland was able to withstand a personal scandal (the revelation that he had fathered a child out of wedlock) to become the first Democrat elected president since 1856. Flag-style banners like this one helped voters to show their partisanship during parades and marches.
