Women’s Fraternal Costume
ca. 1900
Cincinnati Regalia Co.
USA: Ohio, Cincinnati
Paper; watercolor; photograph

Original drawing from a fraternal supply company. Full-length image of a woman wearing a long red, white and blue dress. Figure has photographic cut-out face. Dress has long blue sleeves with wide openings. Section at top is blue with white stars, rest of dress is vertical red and white stripes. She wears a blue sash with a white star on each end. She wears a cream cap.

Regalia companies catered to both women’s and men’s fraternal groups. They produced catalogs specifically designed for women’s organizations which displayed the regalia and costumes of that particular order. Because of the distinct American flag-inspired style of this costume, it was likely created for a group with a patriotic agenda, such as the Daughters of America, a Junior Order of United American Mechanics auxiliary.
