Carrying a sword, and wearing a chapeau, sash, and gauntlets with a dress uniform, Joseph Jackson, the subject of this portrait, is in regalia designed to be worn in a parade or procession. He may have been a member of the Patriarchs Militant group of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows. In 1889, around the time this portrait was taken, 300 members of the group met for a reunion in Detroit. Events at the meeting included a dress parade and a drill competition.
