Photograph shows group of 13 members of Grand United Order of Odd Fellows (GM-5); on steps of building; they wear top hats, collars, and aprons; on back in pencil: "Jas R. Thompson / Washington St / Below Post Office / Assinippi / Mass / Take good Care of this Picture."

This photograph likely belonged to James R. Thompson (1862-1931). It shows thirteen members of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, an African American fraternal group, in their regalia. In 1894 Thompson lived in Assinippi, [Norwell] Massachusetts, and worked as a laborer. The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows chartered Edward E Bennett Lodge No.3338 in Brockton, Massachusetts, on November 13, 1890. Thompson probably belonged to this lodge. Seven years after E.E. Bennett Lodge was formed, the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows held its District Grand Lodge convention in Brockton. The two day session on September 8th and 9th in 1897, brought delegates from about 30 lodges together for a business meeting and luncheon on the first day. On the second day, the group staged parade and ball on day two. One thousand men were expected to participate in the parade. A man named J. R. Thompson, the probable orginal owner of this photograph, was listed as a member of the host lodge for the event. An unknown photographer took this picture at the front entrance of the Brockton City Hall. This building was erected between 1892 and 1894.
