President McKinley Glass Jar or Mug with Lid. Molded glass jar (a) with lid (b). a: Jar or mug has central design of raised image of McKinley's head in profile within circle; around circle's edge, the raised text, "PROTECTION AND PROSPERITY / MAJ. WM. McKINLEY". On either side of this design, is another circle with a scrolled decoration at center; between these is a handle. b: Lid has raised scrolled decorations around it, and cylindrical handle at top center. Interior of jar and lid are textured to create "frosted" look. Bottom unmarked. b: lid


This glass vessel, possibly a mustard jar, promoted candidate William McKinley in the 1896 presidential election. It reads “Maj. Wm. McKinley” with the campaign slogan “Protection and Prosperity.” McKinley served in the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. After four years of service, without injury or illness, he left the army as a Brevet Major.
