Written in pen inside rim "Tim Mahoney"; leather chin strap. Painted on outside of helmet "Co.F/ 308/ Inf./ 77th/ Div." with Statue of Liberty. Helmet also decorated in green, brown, light green and black paint.
The owner of this helmet, Timothy Mahoney (b. 1896) of Cambridge, Massachusetts, likely painted it himself with the identifying letter of his company and the numbers of his infantry unit and division. He also decorated his helmet with an image of the Statue of Liberty and an abstract pattern. His division, the 77th, used the statue as their insignia.
