In the late 1800s, rattan furniture enjoyed huge popularity. Rattan, which grows as climbing palm in Asia, was inexpensive, durable and light. It was also easy to shape into a variety of forms, ranging from the practical and to the fanciful. Rattan furniture makers developed machines that helped them produce rattan furniture efficiently and inexpensively in factory settings. Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company made this chair at their factory in Gardner, Massachusetts.
