Seascape
1900-1925
Caroline W. Pitkin (1858-1937)
USA: New York (probably)
Oil on canvas
frame: 16"h x 20"w x 2"d
Gift of Dorothy and Albert H. Richardson
86.16.1

Scene shows beach with waves, rocks, sea and sky beyond; signed, lower right "C W Pitkin"; in period gold frame.

Caroline W. Pitkin, a New York artist, likely gave this painting to her young cousins, Dorothy and Albert Richardson, Jr., of Woburn, Massachusetts. The Richardson siblings, in turn, gave the painting to the museum. Though she made her home in New York, Pitkin spent time in and Ogunquit, Maine. This painting may have been inspired by the landscape in that area.
