Politcal campaign banner or handkerchief for Wendell Willkie (1892-1944); white ground with outer blue stripe and inner red stripe; blue cursive lettering in center reads "We Want / Willkie"; wooden frame with glass.

A relative political novice when he entered the 1940 race, Wendell Willkie (1892-1944) worked hard to convey his message. Speaking as many as ten times a day, by November he had addressed over two-and-a-half million Americans. To further his cause, Willkie and his supporters put out a number of items bearing his name, like these banners. Despite these efforts, the Democratic incumbent, Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), won the election.
