In the 1952 presidential election, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) faced Democrat Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965). Eisenhower, who was well-known for his military success in World War II, had been courted as a candidate by both parties. During the campaign, Stevenson was perceived as an out-of-touch intellectual and Eisenhower, with his catchy campaign slogan, "I Like Ike," catapulted to victory.
