Full-length portrait of man in 18th-century style clothing. He wears a black hat, red tailcoat, white shirt, vest and breeches, a black Ecravat, and white stockings with black buckled shoes. A curtain drapes at the upper left. At upper right is a window looking out on the ocean with a ship. Portrait is on a piece of paper that has been applied to a piece of wood. There is a hole drilled at top center. Handwritten illegible notations in pencil are visible on back at top left. A strip of muslin is applied along the length of the board on the back right side. An inked inscription is written on the muslin, "83 Capt. William O'Brian 1764."
