Tokens like this one, with tintype portraits of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), were popular during the 1860 and 1864 presidential campaigns. Known as a "doughnut tintype," it was made to hang from a clasp or watch fob. Examples that show Lincoln cleanshaven date from the 1860 campaign; in 1864, he had a beard. Similar tokens with tintypes of vice presidential candidate Hannibal Hamlin (1809-1891) were also made.
