a: Gothic style brown shelf clock with bracket feet. Curved top with point at center. Corners have columnar decoration; each column is topped with a finial. The front has applied sections of a second, light wood for decoration. Round face is covered with glass and has a gold-tone border. Under the twelve is a separate dial and hands to count seconds. Lettering on the face reads, "Waltham / Electric." The numbers are gold-tone. Hands are openwork and black. An electrical cord is attached to the back at bottom center and ends in a plug. An applied brass plate is attached to the back at bottom center. It gives the maker's name and model number 155, along with information about the voltage needed and the clock's cycle. b: Original box for the clock. Brown corrugated cardboard. Label pasted on top reads, "Waltham / Electric Clock / Synchronous Self Starting Motor / Volts 110 A.C. Cycles 60 / Catalog No. / Finish Case / Waltham Watch Company / Waltham, U.S.A."


Affordable, attractive, useful and modern, electric shelf or mantel clocks proved to be a popular wedding present in the 1920s. This one may have been a celebratory gift on the occasion of the marriage of the donor’s parents.
