Military Powder Horn
1762
Benjamin Durgin
USA: New York, Crown Point
Cow horn; metal; wood
overall: 11 1/2 in.; 29.21 cm
Gift of Ronald Grant
88.37.2

Military campaign powder horn; cameo chip carved horn, one-ring nozzle, wood based plug (missing) other end flat and wooden with metal nails; the body incised with geometric panels reads "Benjamin Durgin/ His/ Horn/ Made in Crown Pint/ July 1762/ the 25/ Day 1762"; initials branded and a plan of a five bastion fort (presumably Crown Point).

The early 19th century brand "PS" probably represents "Public Stores." Durgin served at Crown Point (Fort St. Frederick) as a private in Captain Jeremiah Marston's Company of colonel John Doffe's regiment; see Hammond, "Roles and Documents Relating to Soldiers..." (Concord: 1885). Durgin, a resident of Lee, New Hampshire, died March 7th, 1778 in the Revolutionary Army.
