Masonic Spittoon; brown glazed ceramic; alternating raised rose and square and compass with "G" motifs on side; hole in middle of top and on side.

Although women could not become Masons, they learned about the organization's iconography by living around objects decorated with Masonic emblems and symbols. For example, this spittoon, which may have been used in a Masonic meeting room, a tavern, or a town building, features some of the same Masonic symbols-the square, compass, and the letter G-seen on the album quilt.
