Cabinet card photograph of man in Independent Order of Odd Fellows Noble Grand collar with jewel; black-and-white photograph mounted as cabinet card; man standing with one hand on back of chair wearing Odd Fellows collar with crossed gavel jewel (Noble Grand); fur pelt laid on chair; across bottom edge reads, "Christenson's Studio / G.F. / Fairview, / Utah"; reverse has much writing in pencil, "For John Brown / Order No. 111..."

From its formal beginnings in Baltimore in 1819, Odd Fellowship grew as Americans established new towns across the country. This Odd Fellow from Utah wears a jewel—a badge indicating what role he filled in his lodge—suspended from his collar. His jewel in the shape of crossed gavels shows that he held the office of Noble Grand, the presiding office of an Odd Fellow lodge.
