Black and white tintype photograph of three-quarter portrait of unidentified man. Subject has a beard. He wears a dark coat and vest with white shirt and dark bowtie. On his head is a black top hat and he wears a light-colored collar with a Masonic jewel of a square (signifying his status as lodge Master). Around his waist is a light-colored apron with square and compasses. He stands next to a table and holds a maul that rests on the table. Dark brown gutta-percha case has purple velvet lining in its inside front. Gold-tone frame around the image. Dark horizontal line across top of image through hat (line is in the photo itself).
This man wears a metal square—a lodge Master’s badge of office—suspended from a decorated collar. His tall hat and the maul—a kind of gavel—which he holds in his right hand, also signify he was the Master of his lodge.
