George Washington; bust-length portrait of Washington in civilian dress; black coat, white tie and shirt, red drapery behind. Ornate gilded frame.

Massachusetts artist Walter Gilman Page (1862-1934) gave this painting of George Washington, which he modeled on a portrait by Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828), to Washington Lodge in 1895. Page was not a member of the lodge, and it does not appear that he was a Freemason. He may have made the gift to celebrate the lodge’s namesake and its history. Washington Lodge received its charter in 1796 and marked its 100th anniversary around the time of Page’s gift.
