Hunter's powder horn; cameo chip-carved horn with three ring nozzle, wood (pine) base plug with carved initials "JGP"; the body incised with two hunters, crest-like symbol with unicorn(s), trees, vines, squirrels, horses, dogs, cats and trees and the legend "Crown Point July 17th (66)."
The creator of this powder horn, possibly a soldier named James Proctor, likely engraved the horn during times of rest during the war. He marked it with hearts, vines, trees, squirrels, horses, dogs, cats, and a unicorn. He also added the legend "Crown Point July 17th (66),” establishing that he worked on the horn on July 17, 1766 while stationed at Crown Point, New York.
