Horseman's Saber
1770-1790
Maker not marked
USA
Iron; wood
overall: 5"h x 38"w x 4"d
Museum Purchase through the Generosity of Mrs. Alice G. Soldan in Memory of William G. Soldan
75.49.2

Sheet iron guard; flat, D-shaped knuckle bow slotted for sword knot, terminating in flat pommel; shaped wood one piece grip; copper base ferrule; curved single edge, unfullered blade.

The curved blade of this saber allowed a cavalry soldier to slash at troops on the ground on both the left and right sides without nicking his horse’s ears. Few of the colonial militia members fighting on April 19, 1775 had horses with them, but the British column had a number of mounted officers.
